Beschrijving keerzijde The Stymphalian bird standing right, depicted with a long curved beak and prominent crest, rendered in bold relief against an unadorned field. The ethnic legend ΣΤΥΜΦΑΛΙΩΝ is arranged in Greek majuscules around the bird, distributed across the coin's field. The design alludes to the mythological Stymphalian birds slain by Herakles as one of his Twelve Labours, the local legend of Stymphalos in Arcadia.

Aanvullende informatie

Stymphalos, an Arkadian polis best known from myth as the site of Herakles' sixth labor, struck its own coinage only during a narrow window in the fourth century BC — likely tied to its participation in the Arkadian League and the brief political autonomy that came with it. Once Macedonian hegemony consolidated control over the Peloponnese, local civic issues like this one effectively ceased.

The BCD Peloponnesos collection, from which the referenced specimen derives its pedigree, remains the benchmark for Arkadian series attribution.
