Striegau's municipal savings bank issued this notgeld during the acute coin shortage that gripped Germany in the immediate postwar years — a shortage caused partly by wartime hoarding, partly by the collapse of pre-war monetary infrastructure. Thousands of towns across Germany and Austria printed their own fractional emergency notes between 1918 and 1922, most in tiny runs handled by local print shops with whatever materials were available.
Striegau is now Strzegom, Poland, transferred after 1945 under the Potsdam Agreement. Notes from Silesian issuers carry that particular historical weight — the town itself ceased to exist in its German form within a generation of printing this.
