Klaus is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 60 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld emergency currency wave that swept German-speaking Austria in 1920 as chronic coin shortages made small-denomination transactions nearly impossible. Vienna's F. Seitenberg press handled a significant volume of municipal Notgeld work during this period, and the quality of their output varied considerably depending on the commission.
Three signatories — the cashier, the mayor, and his deputy — authenticated each note, which was typical of the accountability structure Austrian municipalities imposed on their own scrip. Jenner Schiffler and Julius Holzmüller sharing the burden of official sanction suggests the issue was treated with some administrative seriousness for a town of Klaus's size.
