Neuruppin's municipal notgeld program is inseparable from the town's obsessive promotion of its most famous son, Karl Friedrich Schinkel — the architect whose neoclassical output reshaped Prussian public space. Oehmigke & Riemschneider were themselves a Neuruppin institution, long known for their illustrated broadsheets before pivoting to the short-lived but prolific notgeld trade of the early 1920s.
The firm printed locally, which was unusual enough to be worth noting — most municipalities contracted printers in Berlin or Leipzig. Having the press in the same town meant faster turnaround during the chaotic municipal scrip scrambles of 1921, when denominations and designs changed faster than supply chains could support.
