To the right, the issuer title Stadt Zell i.W. appears in Gothic Fraktur script at the top, followed by the denomination Fünfzig Pfennig in large ornate blackletter, enclosed within a decorative scrollwork border. Zell im Wiesental is a small textile manufacturing town in the Black Forest, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1920, it issued Kleingeldscheine — small-denomination emergency paper — to compensate for the chronic shortage of coins that had plagued circulation since the war years. The Reichsbank's metal coinage had effectively vanished from everyday trade, hoarded or melted, leaving local governments to fill the gap with printed scrip redeemable only within the issuing community.
