Armand Colin was among the most respected French educational publishers of the twentieth century, and this piece was issued as a classroom pedagogical tool — scolaire money used to teach children arithmetic and the mechanics of commerce, not for any transaction with monetary value. The denomination pairing of "5 Nouveaux Francs / 500 Francs" reflects the exact moment of the 1960 redenomination, when de Gaulle's government introduced the nouveau franc at a rate of 100 old francs to one new — meaning this note was printed in 1958–59 to be current on both sides of that transition.
