The Banque d'Émission de l'Afrique Centrale was a transitional institution, created by France in 1955 to manage currency across its equatorial African territories as independence movements accelerated. This 40 francs denomination was never adopted — the pattern was struck in 1958, just two years before Chad, the Central African Republic, Congo-Brazzaville, and Gabon each achieved sovereignty and the bank was dissolved in favor of the Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale in 1960. The 40 francs value itself has no successor in the BEAC series.
