Tarancón is a small municipality in Cuenca province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns in the summer of 1936, its ayuntamiento found itself forced to manufacture emergency small change after the outbreak of the Civil War severed normal banking supply lines. The Republic's central treasury could not reliably distribute coinage to provincial towns, so local authorities improvised — printing their own vales, billetes de necesidad, and emergency notes on whatever press was available. Here, the local printer Casa Rabadán did the job.
The official stamp substitutes for any sophisticated anti-counterfeiting measure. In a town of a few thousand people, everyone knew what legitimate municipal paper looked like.
