Malta's railway — the Ferrovia — ran a single line from Valletta to Mdina, operating from 1883 until 1931 when the colonial government shut it down in favor of bus transport. It was never profitable, plagued by steep gradients that wore out rolling stock, and the entire infrastructure was subsequently demolished. Almost nothing physical remains.
This issue belongs to Malta's ongoing series commemorating vanished national infrastructure, drawing from a history short enough that living memory of the railway persisted well into the postwar decades.
