1.5 Euro Renfe - AVE

Spain's AVE high-speed rail network opened its first line between Madrid and Seville in 1992, built to coincide with Expo 92 and running on a gauge incompatible with the rest of the Spanish network — a deliberate infrastructure decision that effectively prevented cross-system use. The 1.5 Euro denomination itself belongs to a long-running Royal Mint transport series, an unusual face value that exists purely as a collector issue with no circulation intent. Renfe, the state rail operator, has run the AVE network since its inception under varying degrees of privatization pressure from the EU.
