Ratlam was among the smaller Rajput states in Malwa, nominally subordinate to the British Crown after the 1818 treaty arrangements that brought most of central India under indirect imperial control. By 1871, princely states retained the right to issue copper token coinage for local circulation, though silver and gold had long been ceded to British mints. The "Ranjit Singh" attribution in the series name references the local ruling lineage rather than the Sikh Maharaja of Punjab — a point of persistent confusion in catalog literature.
KM#22.2 distinguishes this from the .1 variety by die characteristics documented in the Pridmore reference on Indian princely issues.
