Johann Jakob Trivulzio acquired the Lordship of Mesocco in 1487 after the Sforza-aligned Sacco family sold it to settle debts — a transaction that placed one of Milan's most capable military commanders in control of a strategically vital Alpine pass linking the Po Valley to the Graubünden. Trivulzio later defected to France and commanded the French forces that crushed Milan at the Battle of Novara in 1500, making him the rare lord who fought against the very duchy that had produced his own coin-striking authority.
Small copper issues from minor Alpine lordships of this period survive in genuinely poor numbers, with most examples heavily corroded from burial.
