The Opuntian Lokrians occupied a stretch of the Greek mainland coast directly opposite Euboia, and their bronze small-change issues of this period reflect a polis operating at the margins of the major power conflicts reshaping central Greece. Philip II had effectively absorbed the region into the Macedonian sphere after the Battle of Chaironeia in 338 BC, meaning these bronzes circulated under conditions of nominal autonomy — local coinage continuing, Macedonian hegemony unmistakable.
