The PAXX AVGG reverse — a deliberate misspelling or scribal error for PAX AVGG — appears on a subset of Maximianus issues and has generated debate among specialists as to whether it reflects a die-cutter's mistake that slipped through workshop quality control or a deliberate regional variant. The Diocletianic mints of this period ran under considerable production pressure following the establishment of the Tetrarchic system, and engraving errors of this kind were not systematically corrected once a die entered rotation.
RIC V.2 398C distinguishes this specifically from the corrected legend type.
