Pergamum's claim to three neokorate titles — the triple temple wardenship encoded in the ΠΡΩΤΩΝ Γ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ legend — was a fiercely contested civic honor during the Severan period. The city had lobbied Rome aggressively for each successive award, and under Elagabalus the imperial cult infrastructure at Pergamum was among the most elaborate in the province of Asia. Coins of this module and weight were not pocket change; they functioned as prestige objects, likely distributed at festivals or used in large civic transactions.
The strategos named in the obverse legend — Tiberius Claudius Alexandros, with the uncertain epithet possibly reading ΘΕΟΛ — has not been definitively identified in the epigraphic record, which complicates precise die-sequence dating within the 218–222 window.
