The Staatsdrukkerij in Pretoria produced these notes under siege conditions — by 1900 the ZAR government was printing its own emergency currency as British forces closed in, having lost access to its London-printed stock from Skipper & East. The result is noticeably cruder than the earlier commercial issues, reflecting what a besieged state press could manage with limited materials and declining time.
Roberts entered Pretoria in June 1900. Notes issued that year by the Regeering were declared void by the British administration shortly after occupation, giving this series an exceptionally short window of legitimate use.
