Dahlenburg is a small market town in Lower Saxony, and this 50 Pfennig note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept German municipalities between 1919 and 1922 — when chronic small-coin shortages forced local authorities to print their own emergency fractional currency. Franz Scherrer of Hanover handled a considerable volume of such municipal work during this period, supplying notes to dozens of towns too small to negotiate directly with major security printers.
The single magistrate signature reflects Dahlenburg's modest administrative structure. Jonas signed as the issuing authority, bearing personal accountability for redemption — a legal obligation that became increasingly strained as hyperinflation accelerated through 1921.
