Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse is printed in a monochrome grey-brown palette, divided into Swedish and Finnish text columns. At upper left a cartouche inscribed '50 MARK' mirrors a matching cartouche at upper right reading '50 MARKKAA', flanking a large bold '50' numeral at centre top. The Swedish text 'FINLANDS BANK / vid anfordrán / FEMTIO MARK / I GULD' occupies the left half, while the Finnish equivalent 'Suomen Pankki / waatimuksesta / Viisikymmentä / Markkaa kullassa' fills the right, both executed in letterpress over a fine guilloche underprint. Two manuscript signatures appear across the centre, with the year date '1882' set in a small oval cartouche below, and serial number 'No' printed twice at lower left and lower right.

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse is laid out symmetrically in a monochrome brown tint, with large ornate rosette medallions bearing the numeral '50' at lower left and lower right, flanked by the denominations 'MARK' and МАРК' respectively. At upper centre, the trilingual legend 'WIISIKYMMENTÄ MARKKAA / KULLASSA' is set in bold letterpress above a central oval vignette of an intaglio harbour scene with a tall-masted sailing vessel at anchor in a coastal bay. Below the vignette, the Russian text 'ПРЕДЪЯВИТЕЛЮ СЕГО / ФИНЛЯНДСКИ БАНКЪ ВЫДАЕТЪ ПЯТЬДЕСЯТЪ МАРКЪ ЗОЛОТОМЪ' is printed in Cyrillic, with trilingual fine-print legal text panels running along the lower margin.

Opmerkingen

Finland in 1882 was an autonomous Grand Duchy under the Russian crown, and Suomen Pankki occupied an unusual position — legally a Finnish institution, operationally independent, yet ultimately subject to imperial oversight. The gold mark series, denominated in three languages reflecting the administrative reality of the period, was tied to the Finnish markka's peg to gold established by the 1877 monetary reform, which had detached Finland from the Russian ruble standard entirely.

The trilingual titling on this series is not decorative multilingualism — it was a jurisdictional statement, acknowledging Finnish, Swedish, and Russian administrative standing simultaneously. That the Russian designation appears third is, depending on your reading of the politics, either protocol or a quiet preference.
