Köslin's 1921 Kleingeldscheine were a direct consequence of the postwar coin shortage that stripped Germany's small-change supply bare — mints simply could not keep pace with circulation demand, and hundreds of municipalities stepped in to fill the gap. The local Kunstverlag Arthur Kolterjahn printed this series in-house, which is uncommon; most towns contracted Leipzig or Berlin firms for their notgeld.
Designer O. Thämer's involvement suggests a deliberate aesthetic investment — Kolterjahn was a regional art publisher, not a jobbing printer, and the collaboration reads as civic pride as much as fiscal practicality.
