Haibach bei Aschach is a small rural commune on the south bank of the Danube in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller note is a product of Austria's postwar Notgeld wave — the municipal emergency currency that flooded the country between 1919 and 1921 when small-denomination coins vanished from circulation entirely. Karl Lanz of Eferding was a regional printer who supplied several nearby communes during this period. Three signatories were required for validity: the Bürgermeister, his deputy, and a Gemeinderat member — an unusually formal authentication structure for a note of such negligible face value.
