正面描述 The full coat of arms of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield supported by crossed flags and surmounted by a displayed eagle; the shield quarters feature a lion rampant, a standing figure with a rifle, an anchor, and an ox wagon, representing the emblems of the Transvaal Republic. The entire armorial device is enclosed within a raised pearled border. The legend ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK is arranged in a circular inscription around the periphery, reading from lower left to lower right. A small decorative star ornament appears at the base of the design below the coat of arms.

附加信息

The South African Republic's 1874 pattern coinage was produced in London as part of an early attempt by the Transvaal government to establish its own currency infrastructure — an ambition that repeatedly stalled due to the republic's chronic fiscal instability and the political complications of operating a mint in a landlocked territory still heavily dependent on British commercial networks. These patterns never entered circulation; the ZAR would not produce circulating coinage until the Pretoria Mint opened in 1892.

The Hern reference places this among a small family of trial pieces from the same year, most struck in limited numbers for governmental evaluation.
