Gurbandurdy Zelili was an 18th-century Turkmen poet whose work circulated orally for generations before being formally transcribed — his inclusion on a gold commemorative in 2003 reflects the post-Soviet project of constructing a national literary canon under Saparmurat Niyazov's presidency. Niyazov, who had declared himself Türkmenbashi, was simultaneously issuing his own writings as sacred national texts, which makes the choice to honor a pre-Soviet folk poet a genuinely complicated cultural signal.
