The République du Congo — not to be confused with the neighboring Democratic Republic — has issued commemorative silver through the BCEAC framework since the early 2000s, largely as a revenue stream rather than for domestic circulation. These pieces were struck under contract and never intended to pass through Brazzaville's economy. The DC-2 designation references the Douglas DC-2, the twin-engine airliner that preceded the legendary DC-3 and flew commercially from 1934.
Only 112 DC-2 aircraft were ever built before Douglas retooled for the far more successful successor.
