Barbados launched its gold coinage program in the late 1970s and early 1980s partly as a mechanism for generating hard currency revenue through collector and bullion markets — a strategy common among small Caribbean nations following the collapse of the Bretton Woods system. The .500 fineness is a deliberate economic choice, not a metallurgical one: it halved the gold content relative to a fine-gold equivalent while keeping the coin accessible at lower spot prices.
The Triton series drew on Barbados's specific maritime mythology rather than generic Caribbean imagery, distinguishing it from the flood of similar collector issues produced by regional neighbors in the same period.
