| Obverse description | Centrally positioned multi-line legend filling the field, rendered in Devanagari script with the state name and date incorporated within the inscription. The flan is irregularly struck with slightly uneven edges, characteristic of provincial Indian copper coinage of the period. The lettering is bold and raised, occupying the majority of the coin's surface without a formal border or decorative frame. |

Ratlam was a small Rajput princely state in Malwa whose coinage often lagged decades behind its nominal dates. The attribution to Ranjit Singh here is conventional — the state's copper issues from this period were struck with considerable irregularity, and die workmanship at the local mint was crude enough that many pieces circulate among collectors under disputed attributions. KM#23 is among the more straightforwardly assigned types, but the 1885 dating reflects regal rather than Gregorian convention.
