Additional information

Samsam al-Dawla's independent coinage from Tawwaj reflects the fractured political reality of the Buyid confederation after 978 CE, when the dynasty's territories were effectively partitioned among competing brothers. Tawwaj, a mint town in Fars province, struck silver dirhams for Samsam al-Dawla during his tenure as ruler of Fars and Khuzestan — a period defined by near-constant conflict with his brother Sharaf al-Dawla, who eventually seized power from him in 983 CE and had him blinded.

378 AH places this piece squarely in that contested window.
