| Obverse description | Cast round coin with a central square hole, as typical of Chinese cash coinage. Four Chinese ideograms in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central perforation, reading top-to-bottom then right-to-left: 順 (Shun), 治 (Zhi), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bao). The characters occupy the four quadrants of the obverse field, each contained between the inner rim of the square hole and the outer raised border. The legend 順治通寶 (Shunzhi Tongbao) translates as 'Circulating treasure of the Shunzhi reign,' referencing the first Qing dynasty emperor to rule over China proper. The casting is bold with well-defined strokes and a plain raised rim encircling the coin. |
