| Descrizione del dritto | A Tudor rose in full bloom occupies the central field, its petals rendered in high relief and surrounding the circular central hole. Surmounting the rose at the top is an imperial crown, adding a regal focal point to the design. The circumferential legend GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR runs around the periphery in raised Latin lettering, separated from the inner design by a raised circular border. The entire coin is bounded by a fine milled border of beads. The design, attributed to engraver Derwent Wood, combines heraldic symbolism with clean, functional aesthetics suited to a holed circulation coin. |

Southern Rhodesia gained the right to issue its own coinage in 1932 following the establishment of the Currency Board, making it one of the few British colonial territories in sub-Saharan Africa to operate a fully independent local coinage rather than circulating the Southern or East African shilling series. The 1938–1939 dates fall within the first years of George VI's reign, following his unexpected accession after Edward VIII's abdication in December 1936 — meaning the dies had to be retooled relatively soon after the territory had already updated its coinage for the new king.
