Schönau im Wiesental was a small textile town in the Black Forest, and like hundreds of German municipalities in late 1923, it was forced to print its own emergency currency simply to meet payroll as Reichsbank notes became worthless faster than they could be shipped. A billion marks — printed locally by Alb. Wetzel, a press better suited to commercial stationery than currency work — would have bought little more than a loaf of bread by the time the ink dried.

The Rentenmark reform of November 1923 rendered the entire issue obsolete within weeks of printing.
