| Additional information |
The Caeni were a minor Thracian tribe whose coinage is almost entirely defined by a single ruler, Mostis, whose reign spans roughly this issue's production window. His tetradrachms follow the broad Thasian weight standard that dominated Thrace in the late second and early first centuries BC — a deliberate alignment with regional commercial norms rather than any assertion of independence from them. The tribe occupied territory in the Hebros valley, an area under increasing pressure from both Macedonian successor-state remnants and the expanding Roman presence following the reorganization of the Macedonian province in 148 BC.
Dies for this series show significant variation, suggesting production spread across multiple decades rather than a single concentrated issue.
