The Pictones were a Gaulish tribe settled along the Atlantic coast of what is now the Poitou-Charonne region, and their coinage circulated during a period of intensifying Roman pressure that would culminate in Caesar's Gallic Wars. Electrum staters of this type are among the more distinct issues from western Gaul, and the hand motif has been interpreted by scholars variously as a votive symbol, a tribal marker, or an import from Armorican iconographic traditions — no consensus holds.
LT#4395 in the Latour corpus places this type firmly within the Pictonian attribution, though earlier catalogers disputed it.
