| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a quartered heraldic shield surmounted by a crown, displaying in the first and fourth quarters the fleurs-de-lis of France and in the second and third quarters the dolphins of Dauphiné. The shield is set within a cusped or pointed arch reminiscent of Gothic architectural framing. A circular legend in uncial Latin characters surrounds the composition, reading LVDOVICVS FRACORV RE P, identifying the issuer as Louis, King of France and Dauphin. The overall style is characteristic of late-medieval French hammered billon coinage. |
