Paestum, the old Greek colony of Poseidonia refounded as a Latin colony in 273 BC, retained the right to strike local bronze coinage well into the imperial period — a privilege that diminished steadily under Augustus and was largely extinguished by the mid-first century AD. This semis falls within the reign of Tiberius, issued under the local magistrates L. Caecilius Clemens and Flavius, whose names the obverse legend preserves. Provincial civic issues of this type from Paestum are thinly documented, and the I#612 reference places it among a small, poorly understood group.
