Paestum, the old Greek colony of Poseidonia refounded as a Latin colony in 273 BC, retained the right to strike local bronze coinage well into the imperial period — a privilege that diminished steadily under Augustus and was largely extinguished by the mid-first century AD. This semis falls within the reign of Tiberius, issued under the local magistrates L. Caecilius Clemens and Flavius, whose names the obverse legend preserves.
