正面描述 Frontal bust of the emperor Anastasius I, helmeted and cuirassed, with pendilia visible at either side of the helmet. The effigy is rendered in the late antique Byzantine style characteristic of Frankish imitative coinages, with a stylized, somewhat barbarous execution. The emperor holds a spear over his right shoulder and bears a shield decorated with a horseman motif on his left arm. A circular beaded border frames the design, with the legend D N ΛNΛSTΛSIVS PP ΛVC distributed around the periphery in debased Latin characters.

附加信息

Frankish kings in the late fifth and early sixth centuries struck gold solidi closely imitating Byzantine imperial types rather than asserting independent iconography — a calculated move that kept their coinage acceptable in Mediterranean trade networks still oriented around Constantinople. Clovis had every political incentive to present himself as operating within, rather than against, the Roman order, particularly after his Catholic baptism around 508 and the honorific consulship granted by Anastasius himself.

The weight is slightly below the Byzantine standard, a consistent feature of Frankish pseudo-imperial gold that distinguishes contemporary imitations from genuine eastern issues without requiring die analysis.
