| Obverse description | Frontal bust of the emperor Anastasius I, helmeted and cuirassed, with pendilia visible at either side of the helmet. The effigy is rendered in the late antique Byzantine style characteristic of Frankish imitative coinages, with a stylized, somewhat barbarous execution. The emperor holds a spear over his right shoulder and bears a shield decorated with a horseman motif on his left arm. A circular beaded border frames the design, with the legend D N ΛNΛSTΛSIVS PP ΛVC distributed around the periphery in debased Latin characters. |
