Austria's Pfennig coinage of this period was produced under a margraviate still consolidating its political identity — the transition from Margraviate to Duchy would not come until the Privilegium Minus of 1156, when Frederick Barbarossa elevated Austria to satisfy the rival claims of Henry Jasomirgott. Attribution across Leopold III, Leopold IV, and Henry II remains genuinely contested because these bracteate-style denars were not systematically differentiated by their issuers, leaving modern cataloguers reliant on hoard stratigraphy and stylistic die groupings rather than documentary evidence.
