Additional information

Korkyra — modern Corfu — occupied an unusual position in the Greek colonial world, founded by Corinth yet frequently at odds with its mother city. The island's independent commercial ambitions, fueled by its position on the Adriatic trade route, made it one of the wealthiest poleis in the western Greek sphere by the early fifth century. The conflict between Korkyra and Corinth over the colony of Epidamnos would eventually draw Athens in and help ignite the Peloponnesian War.

The HGC 6#57 classification covers a notably broad chronological range, reflecting genuine uncertainty about precise dating within this archaic series.
