Kleitor was a small Arkadian polis in the upper Aroanios valley, politically obscure enough that its independent coinage is rarely discussed outside specialist literature. The city joined the Arkadian League in the fourth century but struck its own silver during this earlier period, likely asserting local identity at a moment when Arkadian communities were navigating the competing pressures of Argive and Spartan influence across the Peloponnese.
The BCD collection remains the primary reference point for attributing these diminutive issues, as Kleitorian coinage appears in no major ancient literary source and survival rates are extremely low.
