Beschrijving keerzijde A cross with notched or indented arms, each quarter filled with a symmetrical foliate or leaf motif, creating an ornate floriate cross design. The bold relief of the foliage fills the quarters generously, lending the reverse a decorative, almost heraldic character consistent with hammered coinage of the Principality of Orange. The surrounding peripheral legend invokes a devotional inscription in Latin.

Aanvullende informatie

Frédéric Henry inherited the Principality of Orange from his brother Maurice in 1625 and held it until his death in 1647, but his actual control over the enclave — a tiny sovereign territory surrounded entirely by French soil in the Vaucluse — was perpetually contested. The M on this liard has generated bibliographic disagreement: most authorities now read it as a mint mark rather than a monetary denomination indicator, though the point was disputed well into the twentieth century among scholars of féodales coinage.
