Korkyra — modern Corfu — occupied an uncomfortable position between the Greek and Illyrian worlds during the third century BC, and these drachms were struck through decades of mounting Illyrian pressure that culminated in the island's appeal to Rome in 229 BC. That appeal triggered Rome's First Illyrian War, a campaign often cited as the Republic's first meaningful military intervention east of the Adriatic. The city effectively surrendered its independence to secure the alliance.
The HGC 6, 41 classification places this among the later civic issues before Roman protectorate status ended autonomous Korkyran coinage.
