Amisos struck this bronze under Mithridates VI during the period when he was systematically absorbing the Greek coastal cities of Pontus into his kingdom — granting them autonomy on paper while aligning their coinage with his dynastic program. The city retained its civic mint identity, but the output served Pontic imperial ambitions as much as local commerce. Mithridates would eventually lose Amisos to Lucullus in 71 BC, at which point the city was sacked and the mint ceased production under his authority.
