Tegea occupied an awkward position during the Peloponnesian War — nominally allied to Sparta yet repeatedly pressured by Argos, its traditional rival. Bronze civic coinage of this period reflects a city asserting local identity under sustained external pressure. The Arkadian League had dissolved by this point, leaving member poleis to issue independently, which accounts for the relatively brief window this type was produced.
