Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, a plain cross pattée divides the field into four cantons, each containing a square pellet. The surrounding legend reads +GENEVA CIVITAS, disposed around the periphery of the coin in Latin characters. The die-work is typical of Romanesque hammered coinage, with bold, slightly irregular lettering characteristic of the Geneva episcopal mint of the late 11th to early 12th century.
