Vendôme's anonymous deniers of the mid-tenth century predate the county's absorption into the orbit of the Capetian dynasty by several generations, issued at a moment when local lords across the former Carolingian heartland were asserting independent minting rights almost by default — central authority had simply collapsed too thoroughly to contest them. The "anonymous" attribution reflects not anonymity in the modern sense but a deliberate omission of any count's name, a practice that may have been intended to invoke Carolingian continuity rather than personal lordly authority.
