| Obverse description | Central cross with a pellet in each of the four quarters, all enclosed within a broad outer border composed of radiating lines or wedge-shaped elements forming a distinctive beaded or rayed rim. The cross is boldly rendered in relief, characteristic of the crude hammered style of late tenth-century Saxon coinage. The overall design is strongly geometric, with the pellets placed symmetrically to fill the quadrants. The flan is irregularly shaped, as typical of hand-struck issues of this period. |

Issued under the Billunger dukes during a period when Saxony functioned as the eastern bulwark of the Ottonian empire against Slavic incursion, these deniers circulated through a region still being absorbed into the Latin monetary system. The Billunger mint output from this window is poorly documented, and attribution between specific duke and exact mint remains contested among specialists — Dannenberg's numbering has been revised more than once.
