Nijmegen occupied an awkward political position in the early 1560s — nominally under Habsburg authority yet increasingly assertive in municipal coinage rights as the Dutch provinces chafed under Philip II's fiscal and religious policies. This daalder was struck during that charged interval before the outbreak of open revolt, when several cities pushed the boundaries of their minting privileges. The Dutch-legend variety distinguishes it from the Latin-legend issues struck concurrently, a choice that likely reflects deliberate municipal assertion rather than administrative accident.
