The Durotriges occupied the territory of modern Dorset and parts of Somerset and Wiltshire, and their coinage tells a story of deliberate isolation. While neighboring tribes adopted increasingly refined coin designs through contact with Gaulish traders and Roman merchants, the Durotriges moved in the opposite direction — their bronzes grew progressively more abstract and debased over time, a trajectory that appears to reflect both geographic insularity and the disruption of Atlantic trade routes after Caesar's Gallic campaigns curtailed cross-Channel commerce through ports like Hengistbury Head.
