The legend LEIBERTAS is inscribed before the bust and C·CASSI·IMP behind, identifying the imperator Gaius Cassius Longinus as issuing authority. The archaic spelling 'LEIBERTAS' is a deliberate affectation of Republican orthography, invoking the ideal of freedom that underpinned the Liberators' cause. The legend LENTVLVS is inscribed in the lower field and SPINT below, abbreviating the name of Publius Cornelius Lentulus Spinther, the moneyer responsible for the issue.
