The obverse legend ΦΟΥΡ ΤΡΑΝΚΥΛΛΙΝΑ ϹΑΒ encircles the bust, identifying the subject as Furia Tranquillina Augusta, wife of Gordian III. In his raised right hand he holds a cantharus, the deep wine cup associated with his cult, while his left hand grasps a long thyrsus, the fennel-staff wreathed with ivy and topped with a pine cone that serves as his divine emblem. At his feet crouches a panther, the animal sacred to Dionysus, rendered in profile. The encircling legend ΕΠΙ ΑΙΛ ΑΡΙϹΤΟΝΕΙΚΟΥ ΓΕΡΜΗΝΩΝ identifies the civic magistrate Aelius Aristonikos and the issuing city of Germe in Mysia. |
